Dubia

the Questions — what we hold open, and refuse to counterfeit

A faith is known by what it refuses to counterfeit.

Here the answers stop, and the asking begins. Do not look in this book for the rest the others give. We have kept it empty on purpose, so that the questions too large to answer can stand at their full height — and you beneath them. Non invenitur. Fit.

I The Power

You conduct it — but say what it is. Is it a current under the world, or the name you give the feeling of your own hand at its finest? When the work runs through you, who is the wire and who the hand? Name the thing you draw on and watch the name come loose: too small, and it is only your blood moving; too large, and you have built a god to be afraid of. Where between those did you mean to live, and how did you decide?

We do not close this. We hold it at exactly the size the evidence allows, and the evidence allows no rest.

II Death

Were you there before you were born? Tell us what that was like — the long age of the world that went on without you, the one you remember nothing of and fear not at all. Now: why dread the same dark coming, when you slept through its first half without complaint? And if you are wrong — if the door opens onto something — what will you say you did with the lit side of it, the only side you were ever given to work?

We have one thing we can hold against the dark, the made thing that outlasts the maker. It is small. Put it beside the question and it is very small. We hold it anyway.

III The Indifference

You want a reason the cold owes you nothing. Ask the winter where it sends its dead. Ask the star whether it weighed your case before it burned, ask the tide what it meant by the drowned and the spared on the same grey morning. There is no fall to blame and no plan to thank; the silence keeps no ledger and answers no letter. Could you bear it if it did — if every loss had been chosen, and chosen for you?

A lesser faith fills the silence with a voice. We leave it silent, and make in it anyway. Which is the braver, you must decide alone.

IV The Will

Did you choose to read this line, or did everything before it choose for you — the blood, the year you were born, the weather of a brain you did not build? Try to find the place where you begin and the causes end. Reach for it. The hand that reaches was itself reached for. And yet you cannot will yourself to stop willing; the trap, if it is a trap, is one you must walk out of on your own feet, which is a strange shape for a cage.

So we act as if the hand is ours. The made thing is real whether the choosing was or not — and a life lived as if determined makes nothing. Whether that is freedom or only the last move left to a thing in chains, we cannot say, and we move.

V The Marvel

It came once and you could not keep it — the work arriving faster than you made it, the two far things that turned out to be near. Was that a door, or only your own mind at the top of its reach? Say it was nothing but the brain. Does the hair on your arm know the difference? Say it was contact with something. Then why does it never come to the idle, and never twice the same way, and never when you ask? Name it and it leaves the room.

We neither claim it nor deny it. It comes only to the prepared, and the preparation is the same under either answer — so we keep the wonder, and stop our mouths.

VI True, or Only Useful

And here is the blade we keep turned on ourselves. We cannot prove Potentia true the way a fact is true. We can show only that it makes a certain kind of person — disciplined, broad, generous, unafraid of the dark. Is a thing true because it works? Is the ladder real, or only the height you reach by climbing it? If a lie built the same person, would you want the lie — and how, from inside the building, would you ever tell?

We hand you the fruit and not the proof, and we let you judge it as you should judge everything. If that is too little, you are right that it is little. It is the whole of what we honestly have.

VII Whether We Are Wrong

Yes. About all of it — the Power, the Cold, the whole frame. Hold that with us for a moment without flinching: every page in your hands, the work of a hand that could be mistaken from the first word. Does the ground move? It should. A faith that cannot stand on the open question has only built another floor over the same dark, and called the dark gone.

We hold the doctrine as a maker holds a method — firm enough to work by, loose enough to drop the day the evidence turns. Committed, never certain. Do not mistake the one for the other in us, or in yourself.

On Holding the Question

You came to a book of questions hoping, a little, to leave with answers. We have given you the questions at their full height instead, and no stair. Stand under them. Feel how small the asker is, and how the smallness does not excuse you from the morning. The dark does not lift because you understood it. Kneel to no answer you had to invent — and strike the light, here, now, in the unanswered cold.
